Millions Gather in Najaf to Mourn Ayatollah Ali Khamenei During Funeral Procession
More than two million mourners gathered in Najaf as Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s coffin arrived from Tehran for funeral rites at the Imam Ali shrine. Senior leaders, officials, and IRGC commanders attended the procession, which continues through Karbala before burial in Mashhad amid the ongoing regional war.
Khamenei was killed in United States and Israeli airstrikes on February 28, 2026. His funeral procession in Najaf witnessed participation from senior officials, including Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Large crowds carrying flags gathered along the procession route, expressing support and raising anti-United States slogans as the ceremony reflected deep mourning and regional solidarity.
The multi-city funeral procession, combining Shia mourning traditions with expressions of political and religious support, will continue from Najaf to Karbala before the final burial ceremony in Mashhad on July 9.
